This terracotta serpent mosaic coils in continuous motion, with marble tesserae set into a warm red terracotta field to create a surface of rhythm, contrast and historical atmosphere. Inspired by a late eleventh-century floor at Sant’Adriano, San Demetrio Corone in Cosenza, the composition interprets a medieval ecclesiastical pavement language through a material palette suited to De Ferranti’s project-led work.

The serpent is composed from small triangular marble tesserae, arranged to create texture, direction and a sense of movement across the panel. Against the red terracotta ground, the cooler marble reads clearly without losing the softer warmth associated with cloisters, Romanesque interiors and Mediterranean floors.

This terracotta serpent mosaic can be adapted by special commission, including scale, substrate and stone selection, subject to the demands of the project. It is particularly compelling where a designer wants archaeological reference without a cold or museum-like atmosphere. The clay ground gives the piece a more intimate, earthy character than darker stone substrates.
