Calico Laguna fresco tiles are inspired by fresco wall paintings: polished slip surface, similar technique to that used in Ancient Greek pottery. These tiles have the aged and weathered look of ancient frescoed walls. Instead of a conventional glaze, they have a satin finish, fired to 1045°C for colour stability, and are sealed to ensure they are impervious to water and grease.

Fine diagonal lines cross a chalky off-white field, forming a lightly drawn diamond pattern across each tile. Muted lagoon-green leaves sit at the edges of the design, meeting across adjoining tiles to create restrained four-leaf details. Subtle scuffs, tonal variation and softened markings contribute to the time-worn character of these pale green fresco tiles.

The open composition gives the pattern space to breathe. These green and ivory ceramic tiles can introduce colour and repetition without creating an excessively dense or highly contrasting surface.

Aegean and Roman Surface References

Akrotiri, on Thera in modern Santorini, was an Aegean Bronze Age settlement with close connections to Minoan Crete. Its buildings and frescoes were preserved beneath volcanic deposits. Painted Roman interiors preserved at Pompeii after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 provide a further reference for the collection’s mineral colour and weathered surface language.

Planning the Calico Repeat

When assembled, the faint diagonal strokes continue across the joints to establish a larger diamond lattice. The green leaf motifs mark the junctions, bringing a small botanical detail to the otherwise geometric repeat. Grout colour, joint width and tile orientation will all affect how clearly these diamond lattice wall tiles read across an installation.

For alternative Calico colourways, Calico Azurro introduces powdery blue detail, while Calico Rosa offers a warmer interpretation of the same underlying design.
