This textured band relief tile is composed of horizontal layers of texture and geometry, arranged with precision and restraint. Raised stippled fields contrast with incised linear triangles and softly curved wave motifs, creating a structured yet tactile composition.
Rhythm carved into earth.
The central band of triangular forms introduces clarity, while the surrounding textured rows add depth and shadow. Every mark is hand-scribed into raw clay using traditional tools, giving the surface subtle variation and a quiet sense of movement.
Fired according to the Tierra Negra process, the tile develops a rich black satin finish with warm undertones of bronze and deep earth. The softly iridescent surface strengthens the relief, allowing light to graze across raised and recessed elements.
Originally rooted in a pottery tradition used for domestic vessels, this craft is translated here into bold, textural surface design. Elemental craft, structured pattern and a sculptural presence meet in clay.
The full gallery view shows a balanced square, while the detail reveals three distinct mark-making families: repeated punctures, parallel scoring and shallow wave lines. These bands create a natural horizontal direction that can visually widen a wall or organise a panel above joinery, a fireplace or a counter.
For a denser framed arrangement, compare Tierra Negra Africa C. Framed Diagonal Relief Tile Africa F shifts the movement onto the diagonal. The broader Raised Relief Tiles & Mouldings and Textures in Various Finishes & Combinations collections support further material comparisons.
Plan the height and termination of each row before installation so that the banding remains deliberate. Review several samples together, as tonal and hand-worked differences are integral to the material. Grazing light, restrained joints and a sympathetic grout colour will preserve the distinction between the incised and stippled passages.
