De Ferranti’s black handmade terracotta tiles are inspired by Tierra Negra pottery and form a truly unique tile collection created against all odds.
Completely handmade with nothing more than clay, our Tierra Negra ceramic tile collection is truly unique. Traditionally used to fashion cookware, De Ferranti has used its properties to create the ‘un-creatable’.
Origins of this type of pottery can be traced back at least 700 years to vases and pitchers found in archaeological sites. Very much a cottage industry, mostly run by women in a handful of small villages, each piece is moulded into shape by hand, then scribed with simple tools.
The rich, warm, iridescent black satin finish is a subtle yet desirable statement in any interior.
The tradition informing this collection is associated with La Chamba, Tolima, where black and red clay wares are hand-moulded by craftswomen and fired in rural kilns. De Ferranti translates this language into tiles, retaining hand-worked marks and a shifting satin sheen rather than industrial uniformity.
The group combines squares and rectangles with graphic relief. Directional light turns flatter black handmade terracotta tiles into warm charcoal fields, while incised and faceted pieces create moving shadow. Samples help assess tone, relief, grout colour and overall rhythm.
Because the collection includes field formats and pronounced relief, confirm wall or floor suitability, sealing and installation method for each product.
