This rectangular black terracotta tile is inspired by the tierra negra earthenware of Colombia. Its leathery chocolate-brown, unglazed ceramic body is made by mixing red clay and manganese oxide.
The tiles are made by hand and are equally at home in modern or traditional interior settings. They can be left in their natural state or sealed and waxed, as shown.
Tierra Negra Rectangulo forms part of De Ferranti’s Tierra Negra Ceramics Collection.
Rectangulo introduces a brick-like proportion that can be set in running bond, stacked courses or more complex directional patterns. The first gallery image shows an offset arrangement, with tonal shifts and slightly irregular edges keeping the geometry relaxed. The close view reveals fine scratches, pale firing or finishing marks and a leathery surface rather than a uniform factory texture.
A rectangular black terracotta tile can therefore act as a dark neutral field while retaining visible evidence of clay and hand-making. Joint colour has a strong effect: dark grout emphasises the earthy depth, while a lighter joint produces a more graphic masonry rhythm. Review both the natural and sealed or waxed appearances before final specification.
Compare the square format of Tierra Negra Quadrado and the decorative relief of Zimbabwe. The Waxed Terracotta Series offers related patinated surfaces, while Terracotta Floors & Walls provides broader format and colour references.
Dry-lay several courses to distribute tonal variation and resolve corners, returns and cut pieces. Confirm joint width, sealing, maintenance and fixing requirements from current samples. The live product page records exterior use in warm climates, but the project team should verify exposure, substrate and local conditions before specifying any exterior wall installation.
