Zellige Ceramic Mosaics & Tiles

Handmade zellige tiles are among the most enduring expressions of ceramic craft, where colour, light, and imperfection are not flaws but the point. Traditionally produced in North Africa, these tiles are kiln-fired, glazed, and then cut by hand into precise geometric forms, allowing artisans to compose intricate mosaics with remarkable rhythm and complexity.

What makes zellige instantly recognisable is its surface life. Slight variations in thickness, glaze pooling, tone, and edge detail create a shimmering, uneven reflection that feels warm, human, and deeply architectural. In mosaic form, zellige becomes a language of geometry: stars, rosettes, lattices, borders, and repeating fields that can read as historic, contemporary, or both at once.

De Ferranti’s zellige offering includes both classic formats and bespoke compositions, suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, courtyards, stairwells, fountains, fireplaces, and statement walls where texture and light matter as much as colour. Each installation is inherently unique, shaped by the hand of the maker and the alchemy of the kiln.

Handmade zellige tiles and mosaic craft

The craft is closely associated with Morocco and Fez, where glazed terracotta pieces are cut and assembled into geometric compositions. De Ferranti’s Zellige glossary gives further context, while the Zellige Diamond Lattice Mosaic in Green and White shows how hand-cut form, colour contrast and glaze variation create a surface that changes with the light.

Specifying zellige mosaic surfaces

Handmade zellige tiles should be planned as a varied material rather than judged by industrial uniformity. Samples help establish colour range, sheen and edge character. Layout, grout tone, junctions and the distribution of lighter and darker pieces should be reviewed together before installation.
